In 2014, we embarked on a journey to safeguard vulnerable children in nine villages of Jalna district of Maharashtra through the power of kinship care and community monitoring. This grassroots initiative ignited a wave of change, proving its efficacy in 64 villages and ultimately inspiring the Jalna district administration to scale this community-led approach to 200 more villages. The transformative story continues as we empower districts like Beed, Palghar, Kolhapur, and Dhule to build local capacity and create a safety net for children affected by parental migration.

PARTNERSHIPS
Our collaboration with UNICEF allows us to address the unique challenges faced by children from seasonal migrant families in Jalna district. Through this partnership, we work hand-in-hand with government officials to ensure comprehensive care, protection, and safety for these young individuals.
Additionally, our partnership with CHILDLINE India Foundation enables us to operate the CHILDLINE helpline (1098) in Jalna district. This vital service provides a 24/7 lifeline for children in need, offering immediate support and intervention in emergency situations.
Varsha Pawar, a 15-year-old girl from the Banjara tribe in Jalna district, faced a difficult choice when her parents migrated for seasonal work. Determined to continue her education, Varsha bravely decided to stay behind in their village, Viregaon Tanda in Partur Taluka of Jalna district. Living alone presented challenges – she felt scared at night and struggled to manage chores alongside her studies. However, Varsha's resilience shone through as she worked as an agricultural laborer to support herself.
Recognizing Varsha's plight, Pradeep, a local child advocate (Balmitra) in Viregaon Tanda, reached out to the Village Child Welfare and Protection Committee (VCWPC) for help. Together, they found a solution: Uttam Pawar, a kind neighbor who didn't migrate, offered Varsha a safe haven in his home. Varsha could now focus on her studies, supported by her foster family and community. She attends school in a nearby village, diligently balancing her chores and education.
Despite the hardships, Varsha remains determined to achieve her dream of becoming a doctor. With the VCWPC's support and her own unwavering spirit, Varsha's story is an inspiring testament to the power of community and the pursuit of education.
